Class 122(5) In a gland for a shaft, such as for example a propeller shaft a, which is subjected at one end to atmospheric conditions h and at its other end is submerged in water g or other liquid, pressurized air or gas containing atomized lubricating oil is supplied to the clearance between the shaft and a gland sleeve c which is sealed at its atmospheric end, as by mechanical sealing means i, but cpen at its opposite end to allow the oil laden air or gas to escape into the water. The seal i comprises a sealing ring p urged into contact with the end of the sleeve c by a coil spring s. The oil laden air or gas is supplied through radial bores, m, n to an internal annular groove l in the sleeve c, and a diffuser ring d may be fitted at the open end of the sleeve to convert the kinetic energy of the escaping air or gas into pressure.
