Class 40(1) A piezo-electric pressure transducer for e.g. measuring the gas pressure inside an internal combustion engine comprises two semi-cylindrical crystals 1, 2 (Fig. 2), held tightly inside a thin-walled shell 3 attached to an outer casing 5 at the bottom by a corrugated diaphragm 20 freely supported on the back by a plurality of rigid segments 23 lying loosely in recesses 24, 25, so that variations of pressure on the bottom face are transmitted to the shell 3 and the crystals 1, 2 primarily by the segments 23, and the diaphragm can therefore be very thin and flexible. The crystals are pretensioned by steel semi-cylinders (not shown) pressing the crystals from above against the thickened base of the shell 3. Pressure variations on the diaphragm 20 produce a proportional potential on the facing flat faces of the crystals 1, 2 which is led via a copper sheet 7 to a meter. The space between the shell 3 and the casing 5 may be fed with running water for cooling. The rigid segments 23 may have mating end faces as shown, or the ends may be parallel on each segment, leaving triangular gaps between the segments, which only touch on the inner edges.
