Abstract

Calcium fluoride and silicofluoride are formed in the removal of fluorine and gaseous or solid fluorine compounds from industrial gases by adding calcium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate (collectively referred to as "lime") to a stream of the gases, subjecting the lime-containing stream of gases to vortical action, skimming off a portion of the gases containing a higher concentration of particulate matter, returning said portion to the limecontaining stream of gases, and separating solid matter from the remaining portion of the gases subjected to vortical action, e.g. by electrostatic precipitation. Particularly when the gases arise from a sintering machine (e.g. of the pallet type used for sintering ferrous ores in admixture with coke, flue dust and limestone) and a portion e.g. 40 per cent of the gases is recirculated through said machine, coarser suspended particles may be separated from the lime-containing stream of gases, and recirculated with, if desired, additional lime. Suitable apparatus for producing vortical action is described and claimed in Specification 727,704 [Group II] to which the present Specification bears reference.
