Class 38(5) A circuit - breaker in which the arc is extinguished by compressed gas comprises at least two conductive contact holders 4, 5, supported and spaced apart by insulating tubes 1, 2, 3, at least two annular contacts 8, 9 supported by the holders 4, 5, the centtral opening 12, 13 of each contact being closed when the circuit - breaker is . closed but being opened during the opening of the circuit-breaker and gas outlet means comprising insulating tubes 7 enabling the gas to flow through openings 12, 13 to the outside, these tubes 7 communicating with the opening 13 of contact 9 only and passing through contact 8 to a distance therebeyond, whereby the gas discharged by the tubes 7 does not come into contact with the contact 8. The tubes 7 may be mounted around the switching spaces 17, 18, but are spaced apart so that gas supplied at 20 may flow through space 19 and between the tubes 7 into spaces 17, 18. Openings 12, 13 are normally kept closed by switching contacts 14, 15 connected in series, which act as valves and may be operated by the extinguishing gas, the driving mechanism being enclosed in cylinder 16. Opening of the contacts 14, 15 causes the gas to escape through openings 12, 13 and extinguish the arcs. The gas from space 17 flows through opening 12 to space 21 and outlet 22. The gas from space 18 flows through opening 13 to space 10, through tubes 7-to space 21 and outlet 22, thus avoiding contact with contact 8.
