An actuating means for a vehicle door fastening comprises the combination of a fixed socket 8, a handle 11 having thereon a boss 12 which is contained in the socket and has lateral and rotational freedom of movement therein, the inner periphery of the socket and the outer periphery of the boss being adapted for clawlike interengagement under the action of a spring 18 exerting a lateral force on the boss, and a fastening actuating lever 9 to which the said boss is pivotally connected. The lever 9 is connected through linkwork to the door lock and is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 10 between two plates 6 and 7 of the actuating means. The handle 11 is attached to the socket 8 by means of a dual spring ring 13. This ring engages a peripheral groove in the boss 12 the depth of the groove being such in relation to the aperture in the spring ring that the boss 12 can move laterally as well as be rotated. The spring ring is attached to the socket by means of a plurality of transversely extending claws 14 which have a bayonet type engagement with recesses 15 in the periphery of the socket. The extent of lateral movement of the boss 12 is determined by an elongated aperture 12a in which the end of the pivot pin 10 extends. The boss is provided with a claw 16 which can be engaged with a tooth 17 on the inside periphery of the socket, the spring 18 which keeps the tooth and claw in engagement being contained at one end in a recess in the boss and its other end engaging the free end of an arcuate shoe 19 which is pivotally connected to the boss 12 at its other end. The shoe bears on the inner wall of the socket to keep the tooth and claw in engagement. The claw is disengaged from the tooth by moving the handle so that the boss 12 is moved laterally after which the handle can be rotated to release the door lock. The lever 9 is pivotally connected to the boss 12 by means of a pin 21 which engages a circular hole near the periphery of the boss and which extends through a slot in the back-plate 7. When the door lock is of the kind which can be locked against release from the outside of a vehicle by movement of the inside handle in the reverse direction to that which releases the lock the free end of the lever 9 can be provided with notches 22 which can be engaged by a roller 23. When the pin is in one notch the lever is held in a position in which the door is locked against release from outside the vehicle and when the roller is in the other notch the lever 9 is held in its normal position. A cam surface is provided adjacent the second notch which tends to return the lever to this position under the action of the springs 24 which bias the roller 23.
