752,633. Blast furnaces. VEB ZENTRALES KONSTRUKTIONSBURO DER METALLURGISCHEN INDUSTRIE. Oct. 18, 1954, No. 29907/54. Class 51(2). A low shaft blast furnace comprises a hearth 14 and a shaft 15 above the hearth capable of receiving a charge of a depth less than twice the diameter of the hearth, a series of tuyeres 11 extending into the hearth from the side walls and a block 13 of refractory material arranged in the centre of the hearth 14 to form a reaction chamber of annular cross section. The block 13 may be made of carbon bricks or a stamped carbon mass, or both, and comprises a conical upper part mounted on a cylindrical main part. The height of the surface of the charge 12 above the plane of the tuyeres 11 is preferably equal to or less than the diameter of the hearth 14.
