Abstract

752,597. Furnace electrodes. PENBERTHY, H. L. June 22, 1954 [Aug. 3, 1953], No. 18294/54. Class 39(3). An electrode assembly for a glass furnace comprises a steel sleeve 13 open at one end and having a steel bushing 14 at the other end through which extends an electrode 15 of molybdenum or molybdenum alloy to project into the furnace, and the sleeve is supported in position with the bush 14 within an aperture 11 in the furnace wall, the sleeve being cooled by air or water delivered directly through the sleeve to the bushing. The cooling fluid may be supplied through a double-walled tube forming an annular channel around the electrode within the tube, or water is fed through one or more tubes 23 with valves 27 directly against the end of the bush 14, and any water not vaporized is collected in a funnel 28. Glass in the aperture to the inner end of which the sleeve and bush do not wholly extend, is thus solidified. The electrode 15 is formed at the outer end with a threaded bore 39 having at its inner end a central pilot bore 40, so that there may be attached thereto a fresh electrode length correspondingly shaped at its end with a threaded stud and a smaller pilot stud extending therefrom. The sleeve 13 has welded thereto a flange 30 held against the exterior furnace wall by a brick 32 resting on a flange 31 at the lower end of the flange or bracket 30. The brick is pressed inwardly by a threaded screw 38 in a U-shaped metal brace 36. The electrode may project up through the bottom of the furnace.
