In a fluid - pressure power mechanism for steering a motor vehicle, a removable restricting member is inserted in one or both of the conduits leading from the control valve to the power device so as to damp out the initial surge in the flow of operating fluid with its resultant over-actuation. The restriction may have a fixed predetermined diameter and length, or it may be variable in accordance with the temperature of the oil used for operating the piston and cylinder power device so as to compensate for variations in viscosity. In this latter form, the restriction comprises an annular space between the conduit 53 and a cylindrical throttle plug 63 movable in the tube. The throttle is pressed outwardly by a spring 69, but is held in a restricting position by a temperature-responsive element 72, the latter expanding on a rise in temperature of the oil and pushing the throttle plug further into the conduit to increase the restricting effect. Flow to the power cylinder takes place through the conduit 51, aperture 59, chamber 58, past the throttle plug, and through conduit 53.
