Abstract
761,940. Filters. PUROLATOR PRODUCTS, Inc. Aug. 17, 1954 [Aug. 28, 1953], No. 23896/54. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVI] A filter comprises a housing 10, a centre tube 17, a filter element 15 and by-pass valve means 54 carried by the centre tube and operable to relieve excessive fluid pressure in the housing, clogged filter detector means operable in response to operation of the by-pass valve 54 and including an electric circuit closed by means including a thermostatic circuit-closing member 62 movable in the closing direction by operation of the by-pass valve 54, the member 62 being constructed to preclude circuit closing when the fluid is below a predetermined temperature. The by-pass valve is connected by an insulated rod 58 to the member 62 which is bimetallic and when cold is of bow form shown and is in a chamber 61 connected to the interior of the housing 10 by ducts 66. The member 62 is electrically connected through a spring 72 to a member 71 in circuit with a lamp 76 and battery 78. Fixed contacts 65 are formed in the chamber 61 and are grounded as is one end of the battery 78. The by-pass valve operates normally to relieve excess pressure due to cold oil e.g. if the filter is included in the oil system of an engine, when the engine is first started ; due to the bow shape of the member 62 the electric circuit is not closed. When the oil becomes heated the member 62 flattens and opening of the by-pass valve 54 under this condition causes the member 62 to engage contacts 65 and the lamp 76 is illuminated. Closing of the contacts may stop the engine.
