Abstract

751,635. Supplying liquid fuel to burners. LOOSER & CO., AKT.-GES., E. Feb. 27,1954 No. 5840/54. Class 75(1). Apparatus for burning heavy fuel oil comprises a burner including an atomizer 20, Fig. 1a, having an outer tube 19, to which oil is fed by a pump 1, arranged coaxially around an inner tube 21 connected with an oil preheater 8, Fig. 1b, a constriction behind the burner nozzle 3 being adapted to be opened or closed by a needle valve 37a controlling the oil flow to the nozzle, and ports 35 in the inner tube 21, directly behind the constriction, whereby oil pumped to the outer tube 19 recirculates to the heater via the inner tube 21 before and during operation of the burner. The fuel is fed through an inlet 33 to the preheater 8 by a pump (not shown) from a main tank, the preheater 8 containing electrical immersion heating elements 10 and a steam or hot water heating coil 9, thermostats 12, 13 and a float-operated level regulator 31 controlling the feed pump. When the fuel in the preheater 8 has reached a predetermined temperature the thermostat 12 energizes a motor driving the pump 1 which draws fuel from the preheater 8 and delivers it through a conduit 34 to the burner tube 19. The needle valve 37a is initially closed so that all the fuel returns to the preheater via the pipe 21, a conduit 38, a pressure governor 39 containing a diaphragm valve 40, and a conduit 22. The motor driving the pump 1 also drives a fan (not shown) supplying combustion air so that the combustion zone is purged with air and the fuel is preheated for a predetermined period before fuel is discharged from the nozzle 3. At the end of this predetermined period the needle valve 37a is opened by an electrically operated control device 36. An alternative apparatus is described in which an additional thermostat is disposed in the conduit connecting the pump with the outer burner pipe for completing the circuit to an electrical ignition device when the fuel in said conduit reaches a predetermined temperature, and for preventing recirculation of the oil so that the needle valve may be operated by the oil pressure within the inner burner pipe.
