Abstract
1,016,831. Controlling liquid fuel burners. S. KOFINK. Oct. 25, 1962 [Oct. 26, 1961; May 25, 1962], No. 40443/62. Heading F4T. [Also in Divisions F1 and H3] An electromagnetic motor driving a pump is fed with electrical pulses by a variable-frequency transistor oscillator. The pump may be used to supply oil to a furnace heating system and as shown in Fig. 2 the frequency and hence the pump output is pre-set by a variable resistance 37. As shown in Fig. 5 the pre-set variable resistance 37<SP>1</SP> is short circuited by contacts 85 controlled by a thermostat to increase the pump output when the temperature falls; additional contacts 81 increase the speed of a blower 80 feeding air to the furnace the normal speed being controlled by resistance 79 coupled to the resistance 37<SP>1</SP> for common operation. The transistor rectifier 73 supplies D.C. from an A.C. source. The pump may comprise a piston or as shown in Fig. 1 a diaphragm 4, and feeds the burner through an air vessel 22 and a throttle 24. The diaphragm 4 is connected by the armature 6 to a spring-loaded diaphragm 5 which together with cover 3 having a restricted opening 12 forms a damper. In the pump shown in Fig. 3, the diaphragm is secured to the armature 50 which is guided by a rod 53 slidable in a bush 54 and to a member 49 in the pumping chamber 57 which is connected by passages 64, 61 to the inlet and outlet valves 18, 19. The armature 50 is loaded by a spring 52 so that a rubber plate 59 on the member 49 closes the passage 61 in the inoperative condition to prevent back flow.
