751,431. Change-speed gear. AKT.-GES. FUR UNTERNEHMUNGEN DER EISENUND STAHLINDUSTRIE. June 14, 1954 [June 22, 1953], No. 17408/54. Class 80(2) A change-speed gear, arranged behind a controllable hydrodynamic torque-converter 2 on a rail vehicle, is controlled by double clutches C', C', mounted on different shafts, such as a turbo-driven shaft 3 and final output shaft 10, that one clutch A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP> in each pair controlling the lower ratio being an uncontrolled overrunning clutch, which gives gear shift without interruption of power. Fig. 1 provides three speeds as follows. First, through overrun clutch A<SP>1</SP>, wheels 5, 7, 6, 8 and overrun clutch A<SP>2</SP>; second by volitionally,engaging the controllable clutch B, of the pair C', through wheels 4, 6, 8 and overrun clutch A<SP>2</SP>, clutch A<SP>1</SP> overrunnning; and third by volitionally engaging also the controllable clutch B' of the pair C<SP>2</SP>, the path being through clutch B<SP>1</SP>, wheels 4. 6, 7, 9 and clutch B<SP>2</SP>, both A<SP>1</SP> and A<SP>2</SP> overrunning. In Fig. 2, not shown, the wheel 7 is replaced by a stepped pair providing another ratio. The clutch pairs each comprise two multidisc friction clutches A', B<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, the former, A<SP>1</SP>, engaged automatically by a screw and nut connection 15 with the supporting shaft 3, the latter, B<SP>1</SP>, engaged by turbo-fluid pressure supplied through a conduit 31 to a space 29 at the left of an axially fixed piston 22, to thrust a surrounding cylinder 24 leftwards, and disengaged by supplying fluid pressure through a conduit 32 to a space 30 of smaller effective area at the right of the piston. During disengagement the engaging space 29 drains through a presser-plate passage 39 of smaller cross-section than the supplypassage 31, which passage (39) is sealed during engagement by the adjacent clutch disc. The controllable clutches B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> are cooled and lubricated during engagement by turbo-fluid circulated through grooves, not shown, in the discs.
