[Also in Group XXXVIII] In an ultrasonic pulse - echo flaw detector (see Group XXXVIII), the common transmitting and receiving electroacoustic transducer comprises a quartz disc 10 with a discshaped electrode 13 attached to its lower surface and a radial strip electrode 12 spaced from its upper surface and the crystal is coupled to the upper surface of the workpiece 2 by a diverging polystyrene lens 14 and coupling fluid 16 retained by a rubber ring 15 so that a fan-shaped beam of ultrasonic waves is projected vertically downwards into the work piece 2 and the beam is rotated about a normal to the surface of the workpiece by rotating the electrode 12 about the vertical axis of the crystal by means of a motor 11.
