Class 16 A method of rounding and backing books consists in displacing the book sections on one side of the centre line in the direction of the fore-edge from the spine and subjecting the displaced section on the back to a differential pressure from the centre of the book outwardly and then adopting the same procedure to the remaining sections on the opposite side of the centre line. In the machine shown, jaws 1, 2 on opposite sides of the book, 3 are maintained in gripping engagement by backing plates 4 mounted in a supporting frame 5 and pressure is adjusted by clamping screws 6. Coiled springs 7 press the jaws 1 and 2 up to the position shown in Fig. 1 and a rounded stop 8 is mounted beneath the book and is adjustable vertically, in a slot 9 where it is locked by a nut 10, to a position where it touches the foredge of the book 3 while a roller 15 rests on the spine. The roller 15 is mounted on an axis 16 carried by an operating handle 13 pivoting about an axis 14 and the handle 13 also carries a cam 12 to engage a roller 11 on each jaw 1, 2, to move each jaw downwardly against the springs 7. Each backing plate 4 has an opening 17 in which is mounted a pawl 18 pivoted at 19 and urged into engagement with ratchet teeth 20 on the adjacent jaw by a coiled spring 21. As shown in Fig. 3, the handle 13 is first moved from its central position to one side, when the jaw 2 will be pressed down by the cam 12 engaging roller 11 so that the book sections on that side of the centre line are displaced downwardly until the fore-edges contact the stop 8 -and at the same time the roller 15 will be moved over the spine to spread the sections on that side to round and joint the back. The pawl 18 will engage one of the ratchet teeth 20 to hold the jaw 2 while the operation is repeated by moving the handle 13 over to the opposite side. The roller 15 and jaws 1, 2 will be at least equal to a book's length and generally two cams 12 will be interconnected and engage two rollers 11 on each jaw.
