Abstract

751,139. Purifying exhaust gas. RUTH, J. P. March 29, 1954, No. 9156/54. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XII] In an engine exhaust-gas purifier, comprising a casing 11 adapted to contain water and including an inner tube 15 upstanding centrally of the casing with its upper end spaced below the casing topplate 13 and communicating through its base via holes 17 with the casing on each side of a partition 16 transversly bisecting the casing at a height less than that of the latter, while baffles 18 depend from the plate 13 to below the top of the partition 16, the baffles being parallel to and spaced from the partition on opposite sides thereof to define end chambers in the upper part of the casing which communicate with a common discharge pipe 20, and a foraminous sheet 26 transversely bridging the casing below the baffles for supporting an intersticed charge of alkaline material 27, such as lime rock about the tube 15, an inlet conduit 31 is provided for the exhaust gases into the casing adjacent the base of the tube 15. Two similar partitions 16 which extend across the width of the casing 11 from diametrically opposed points of the tube exterior reach from the casing base to a point just over half-way up the casing height. Grids 25 are located across the lower part of the casing to support the sheet 26 whilst a further foraminous sheet 28 is retained on top of the rock by clamps 30 and rigid strips 29, the length of this sheet being defined by the baffles 18. The plate 13 carries the inlet conduit 31 that is located within the tube 15 and is spaced from the casing base by webs 32 which overlie the holes 17 to divert the discharge from the tube 31 away from the holes. The water level is beneath the lower edges of the baffles 18. The pipe 20 leads to atmosphere via a venturi through the inner end of which air is drawn to assist in diffusing the gases. In operation, the exhaust gas is discharged from the conduit 31 and rises in the annular space between the latter and tube 15 which space is partly filled with water; the rising gas entrains water and passes out of the top of the tube 15 through the rock 27, which is thereby wetted, around the lower ends of the baffles 18, through the upper chambers and into pipe 20. Due to the interconnection of the upper chambers the device will still function in a tilted position without loss of water.
