Abstract

Quaternary ammonium carbonates and formates are obtained by heating carbonic or formic esters with tertiary amines in which the nitrogen atom does not form part of a ring of aromatic character. The reaction is preferably carried out under pressure at 120-250 DEG C.; a solvent or diluent may be present. Examples show the production of (1) tetramethylammonium formate from trimethylamine and methyl formate; (2) hexane - 1 : 6 - bis - (trimethylammonium carbonate) from 1 : 6 - bis - dimethylamino - hexane and dimethyl carbonate; (3) choline carbonate from trimethylamine and glycol carbonate; and (4) 3-methylpentane-1 : 5-bis-(N-methylpyrrolidinium) carbonate from 3-methyl - 1 : 5 - dipyrrolidino - pentane and dimethyl carbonate. The carbonate salts (2)-(4) may be converted to salts of other inorganic or organic acids, the tartrates being exemplified. Other specified amines are triethylamine, dimethylethanolamine, diethylisopropylamine, dimethyloleylamine, N : N - diethylcyclohexylamine, dimethylaniline and 1 : 6-dipyrrolidinohexane. Other esters that may be used are isopropyl, lauryl, oleyl, cyclohexyl and phenyl formates and carbonates.
