Abstract

751,061. Thermionic-cathode tubes. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. June 30, 1954 [July 10, 1953], No. 19247/54. Class 39 (1). A hollow electrode such as a cathode 12 and a surrounding electrode such as a grid 14 are mounted between insulating wafers, and the cathode walls then spread towards the grid, so that the adjustment to a small critical interelectrode spacing is deferred until after assembly. The spreading is performed by a tool 42 having the general section shown in Fig. 7, i.e. two flat sides 46 with rounded ends 48. This is slid within the cathode and then rotated, so that the walls of the cathode are bowed outwards. The tool may be mounted in a wider cylindrical portion 40 having a locating shoulder 56, so that the tool penetrates a fixed depth into the cathode. Cut-away portions 52, 54 ensure that only the central section of the cathode, between the insulating wafers, is spread. The tool may be mounted in a handle 34 having a flat portion 50 to indicate to the operator by touch the orientation of the tool.
