Abstract

Chromic orthophosphate (suitable for use in wash primers or metal conditioners and having corrosion resistant properties), orthophosphite and orthoarsenate are prepared by adding an alkali metal or ammonium sulphite and an alkali metal or ammonium bisulphite to a mixture containing an alkali metal or ammonium bichromate and phosphoric, phosphorous or arsenic acid respectively, while maintaining a pH of 1.0-4.5 Stoichio-metric proportions for the reaction: Na2Cr2O7.2H20 + 2H3PO4 + Na2SO4 + 2NaHSO3 + 6H20 --> 2(CrPO4.6H2D) + 3Na2SO4, (or the corresponding reactions involving phosphorous or arsenic acids) are preferred. The initial mixtures of bichromate/acid and sulphite/bisulphite may have pH's of about 1 and 6.2 respectively, and the mixing of these solutions should take place slowly with agitation. Suitable sulphite/bisulphite solutions may be obtained by adding 1 mol of sodium hydroxide (or equivalent sodium carbonate) to 3 mols of sodium bisulphite: alkali metal or ammonium may alternatiively replace sodium. The chromic orthophosphate is in the form of very fine (e.g. 7m ) dark green amorphous particles.
