[Also in Group XXIX] A feed-mechanism for a stock-bar 6 comprises a feed-cylinder 1 moved to and from a position in alignment with a passage in a machine 7, such as a lathe, a first valve 24 operable by gas-pressure to connect the cylinder 1 alternatively to a source of pressure gas and to the atmosphere, a second valve 13 to reverse the first valve and to be operated by the movement of the cylinder, and a manuallyoperable third valve 28 between the first and second valves to open a connection for adjusting the first valve into the position in which gas is supplied to the cylinder. After the stock-bar 6 has been inserted in a conical recess in a plunger 5, the cylinder 1 is swung about a pivot 2 to align the stock-bar with the passage in the machine 7, thus moving the valve 13 to the right to connect a conduit 16 to a conduit 11 which is connected to a source of compressed-air. When the valve 28 is depressed, the valve 24 is displaced to the left to permit compressed air to flow through a pressure regulator 21 (see Group XXIX), and conduits 22, 9 to the space behind the plungers to advance the stock-bar. The pressure in the cylinder 1 may be released without moving the cylinder back to its original position, by depressing a valve 34 to cause a junction-valve 36 to be displaced to the left and hence allow air to flow from the conduit 16 through conduits 33, 35 to restore the valve 24 to its original position, in which the conduit 9 is connected to atmosphere through a port 38. The valve 36 is restored to its original position when the cylinder 1 is moved back to the position shown, the valve 13 then being displaced by a spring 17 to connect the conduit 11 with a conduit 15.
