Abstract
Guanidine salts are obtained by heating an ammonium salt with dicyandiamide in the presence of a quantity of water the weight of which does not exceed that of the dicyandiamide but which is sufficient to prevent the reaction temperature from rising above 220 DEG C. The weight of water employed is preferably from 10 to 100 per cent of the weight of the dicyandiamide and it is preferred to choose the reaction conditions so as to limit the duration of the reaction to less than 1 hour. The reacting substances are preferably employed in quantities such as to provide one-half mol. of dicyandiamide for each ammonium radical present in the salt, a very slight excess of the salt being preferably employed. In examples: (1) dicyandiamide, ammonium nitrate, and water are heated in an autoclave for 20 minutes at 190 DEG C. to yield guanidine nitrate; (2) dicyandiamide, ammonium sulphate, and water are heated in an autoclave at 170 DEG C. for 1 1/4 hours to yield guanidine sulphate; (3) dicyandiamide, water, and industrial ammonium carbonate (a mixture of the carbonate and bicarbonate) are heated at 160 DEG C. for 40 minutes to yield guanidine carbonate.
