Abstract

A wrinkle drying coating composition comprises an organic solvent, a terpolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol with either (a) an alkyd obtained by cooking together, by weight, 19.0 per cent glycerine, 38.0 per cent phthalic anhydride, 21.5 per cent linseed oil acids and 21.5 per cent tung oil, or (b) an alkyd obtained by cooking together 12.28 per cent glycerine, 19.93 per cent phthalic anhydride, 1.15 per cent maleic anhydride, 16.94 per cent linseed oil acids, 23.12 per cent rosin and 26.58 per cent tung oil. In a modification the tung oil is replaced by dehydrated castor oil or oiticica oil. The terpolymer specified consists of 91 per cent vinyl chloride, 3 per cent vinyl acetate and 6 per cent vinyl alcohol. The composition is preferably made by mixing the chosen alkyd with a solvent therefor, e.g. toluol, mixing the resulting solution with a pigment to form a paste and mixing the paste with a solution of the alkyd and a metal drier, e.g. cobalt naphthenate together with a solution of the terpolymer in the same solvent or a solvent compatible with the alkyd resin solution and thinning the composition to a sprayable consistency with further solvent. Examples are given in which the solvents and pigments specified respectively toluol, xylol, cyclohexanone and methyl ethyl ketone, and ultramarine blue, titania and magnesium silicate.
