Abstract

A wrinkle finish coating composition is made by suspending a finely-divided solid vinyl resin in a solution of an alkyd resin having the property of wrinkling with a drier, to form a paste, and mixing the resulting paste as required with further alkyd resin, solvent, drier and colouring material. The vinyl resin may be polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer and the alkyd resin is preferably an oil-modified glycerine-phthalic anhydride-maleic anhydride resin such as that obtained by heating together 12.28 per cent glycerine, 19.93 per cent phthalic anhydride, 1.15 per cent maleic anhydride, 16.94 per cent linseed oil acids, 23.12 per cent rosin and 26.58 per cent tung oil. The weight ratio of vinyl resin to alkyd resin is preferably between 1 : 1 and 1 : 10. The solvent of the alkyd resin solution may be xylol and further materials which may be added to the vinyl resin-alkyd resin paste are butanol, toluol, naphtha, cobalt naphthenate, burnt umber, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, dicalcium aluminate, dicalcium silicate, magnesium silicate and cobalt blue.
