Abstract

A textile dyeing or printing emulsion comprises a water-in-lacquer emulsion, the lacquer phase of which comprises a pigmented dispersion of a solid polyethylene in a solution of a thermosetting resin in a volatile water-immiscible solvent, the ratio of polyethylene to pigment ranging from 0.1 : 1 to 100 : 1 by weight. Polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of at least 1000 may also be dissolved in the organic solvent, the ratio of polyisobutylene to polyethylene being from 0.5 : 1 to 10 : 1 by weight. Instead of polyisobutylene, polystyrene or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile may be used. An emulsion is also described the outer lacquer phase of which comprises a colloidal dispersion of solid polyethylene resin in a solution of polyisobutylene having a molecular weight of 6000 to 140,000 in a volatile water-immiscible organic solvent, the ratio of polyethylene to polyisobutylene being within the limits 0.05 : 1 and 10 : 1 by weight. Suitable thermosetting resins are urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and drying oil-modified alkyd resins. Organic solvents specified are turpentine, mineral spirits, pine oil and high aromatic hydrocarbon solvents. Typical pigments are the phthalocyanines, metal oxides, carbon black, and water-insoluble vat and azo dyestuffs. The polyethylene may be converted to a gel or colloidal form suitable for incorporating in the lacquer phase of the emulsion by first dissolving it in a heated solvent, if desired with polyisobutylene or other gel stabilizer, and then cooling the solvent. Examples are given of the preparation of polyethylene gels, pigmented lacquers (colour concentrates), gel modified colour concentrates, clear emulsion vehicles and pigmented printing and dyeing emulsions.ALSO:A textile dyeing or printing emulsion comprises a water-in-lacquer emulsion, the lacquer phase of which comprises a pigmented dispersion of a solid polyethylene in a solution of a thermosetting resin in a volatile water-immiscible solvent, the ratio of polyethylene to pigment ranging from 0.1 : 1 to 100 : 1 by weight. Polyisobutylen having a molecular weight of at least 1000, may also be dissolved in the organic solvent, the ratio of polyisobutylene to polyethylene being from 0.05 : 1 to 10 : 1 by weight. Instead of polyisobutylene, polystyrene or a copolymer of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile may be used. After the application of the emulsion, the fabric is dried and heated to set the thermosetting resin. Suitable thermosetting resins are urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and drying oil-modified alkyd resins; solvents specified are turpentine, mineral spirits, pine oil and high-aromatic hydrocarbon solvents. Examples are given of the preparation of polyethylene gels, pigmented lacquers (colour concentrates), gel-modified colour concentrates, clear emulsion vehicles and pigmented printing and dyeing vehicles.
