Abstract

A coating composition which on drying yields an abrasion-resistant film comprises a solid polymer of ethylene, which may be modified, a resinous film-forming agent other than a polymer of ethylene, and a volatile liquid which is a solvent for the film-forming agent, the polymer of ethylene being present in a proportion of from 0.7 to 15 per cent of the weight of the film-forming agent. The modified polymers of ethylene may be made by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of another unsaturated compound which will interpolymerize with ethylene or of chain-terminating agents such as dioxolane, cyclohexane, methyl propionate, propionic acid anhydride, diethyl ether, methanol and hydrogen, as described in Specifications 581,899, 587,586, 605,848, and in U.S.A. Specifications 2,395,292, 2,479,082, and 2,456,387. Chlorinated polymers of ethylene may be used. Specified film-forming agents are alkyd resin such as dehydrated castor or linseed oil modified glyceryl phthalate, urea-formaldehyde resins such as butanol-modified urea-formaldehyde, nitrocellulose or a resin ester varnish. Volatile solvents specified are n-butanol, naphtha, toluene, xylene, mineral spirits, amyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, butyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone. Other ingredients such as candelilla wax, dibutyl phthalate, pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, and ferrite yellow and lead, manganese and cobalt driers may be included in the compositions. The coatings may be applied to articles such as refrigerators, household and dental furniture, linoleum and automobiles.
