Abstract

749,672. Valves. LETOURNEAU, Inc., R. G. Jan. 5, 1951 [Jan. 23, 1950], No. 422/51. Class 135. A valve unit operated by a solenoid 15 for controlling compressed air operating clutches and brakes for steering vehicles, comprises a magnetic material casing 14, 14a with a valve seat 18 and containing a non-magnetic sleeve 11 which, with a cavity 9 in a non-magnetic manifold head 2 having a valve seat 17, forms a chamber 12 containing a magnetic material plunger 10 with end valve inserts 21 co-operating with the seats. Normally spring-loaded pins 25 move the plunger to close exhaust port 17 and allow air to pass from port 20 via slots in the plunger to a port 4. Energization of the solenoid closes port 20 and connects ports 4, 17. The closure members 21 are of neoprene and prevent magnetic sticking, help to push the plunger away from the ports when necessary and may be reversed about their attaching pins 22 to prolong wear. The inlet and exhaust ports may be reversed in use. Several units may form an assembly with a common manifold head 2. Specifications 642,205, [Group XXIV], and 666,568, [Group XXXI], are referred to.
