Abstract
749,111. Mouthpieces. JUNGHANS, H. Sept. 17, 1952, No. 23349/52. Class 40 (4). A telephone mouthpiece which encloses the mouth in a sound-tight manner to prevent overhearing by persons in the vicinity of the speaker is provided with respiration valves. An attachment for a telephone handset, Fig. 1, comprises a cylindrical casing 2, coupled to the telephone transmitter 1b by a rubber sleeve 3 on a knee-piece 2a. The cylindrical body 4 of the mouthpiece is held in the casing 2 by felt rings 5 and 6 and plate valves 8 and 14 permit expiration and inhalation. Sound from the speaker is directed by an inclined surface 4b to the microphone of the handset through a hole 4e and a diaphragm 7 of sound-permeable but moisture-tight material, and sound passing through the exhalation valve is absorbed in a labyrinth 4i surrounding a glass wool sound filter 10. A replaceable pulp insert 12, Fig. 2, is provided for hygienic purposes. In Fig. 3, a casing 106 containing a microphone 115 and incorporating a belled mouthpiece and respiration valves is coupled to the handle of a receiver by a crank-handled lever arrangement 104 for adjusting the relative positions of the mouthpiece and earpiece. The microphone is protected by a moisture-proof diaphragm 117 which is connected by a stud 119 to the diaphragm of the microphone and air is led from the expiration valve 110 through a channel 111 to a filter chamber of the kind used in the previous embodiment. Alternative lever and ratchet arrangements for adjusting the mouthpiece relative to the earpiece are described with reference to Figs. 6-8 and 11-14 (not shown), and earpieces adjustable relative to the handle are described with reference to Figs. 7, 9 and 10 (not shown). An alternative filter chamber arrangement comprising a stack of plates bored with holes out of correspondence is also described with reference to Figs. 15 and 16 (not .shown). The use of a microphone enclosed as described and having a mouthpiece according to the invention as an addition to the normal handset on a telephone set is referred to.
