Abstract

749,110. Operating vehicle windows. ROETHEL, J. H. Oct. 5, 1954 [Feb. 6, 1954], . No. 28662/54. Class 20(3). A winding mechanism for raising and lowering the window of a vehicle comprises a single swinging arm 12, mounted by one end on a toothed sector 21, which has a transversely disposed drive pin 46 at its other end moving in an uninterrupted continuous longitudinal slot 40 in the rear wall 43 of an uninterrupted guide channel 39 provided on the window panel holder 38 and running perpendicular to the direction of movement of the window, the drive pin 46 being guided in the channel by a bearing member 48 mounted on the pin and extending over the depth of the channel 39 in bearing contact with the top and bottom walls 44, 45 of the channel and the drive pin 46 having a stop member 90 on its end projecting through the slot 40 to prevent withdrawal. The winding mechanism is mounted on a plate 14 between inner and outer panelling of a vehicle door or body, and comprises a shaft 24 extending through the inner panelling and provided with a hand crank. A driving pinion 23 on the shaft 24 engages the toothed sector 21 rotatably mounted at 22 on the plate 14, the arm 12 being secured to the sector 21 as by rivets 93. A roller spring may be disposed on the plate 14 to exert a twisting movement in the direction opposite to the direction of lowering of the window, shown by the arrow x to compensate for the weight of the window. The pin 46 has a narrow end 41 rivetted to the arm 12 and the stop member 90 at its other end may be integral, the slot 40 having an enlargement 92, through which the stop member 90 may be passed, beyond the end position of the traverse of the pin or, alternatively the stop member may be detachable. The U-shaped channel 39 has its top and bottom walls 44, 45 angled off to obtain a smooth front, the top flange being provided with a further horizontal flange 42 which is spot welded or similarly secured to the window panel holder 38. As shown, the bearing bush 48 is solid and has a central portion 51 fitting into the channel 39 and a flange portion 50 guided against the flat front of the channel 39, the bush 48 being maintained in engagement with the channel by means of a resilient washer 91 of cellular rubber or the like. In place of the washer 91, a helical compression spring may be used. In a modified construction, the bush 48 is formed as a hollow cup-shaped body fitting into the channel and having a flange similar to the flange 50, and a sleeve to fit over the pin 46, the bush being maintained in engagement by a helical compression spring between the base of the cup and the arm 12. The bush 48 may be formed integrally with the pin 46. The bush 48 may be of metal or a synthetic plastic or may be made of sintered metal and soaked with oil for lubrication.
