Referring now to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, there is illustrated a mounting bracket 10 rigidly secured within a hollow structure into and out of which a window is adapted to be moved. The invention is illustrated as applied to an automotive vehicle, and the hollow structure may be a hollow door or fiat portion of the vehicle into which the window may be lowered for opening the window, and out of which the window may be raised for closing the same.
Pivoted to the bracket 10 by pivot mounting means indicated at 12 is an operating arm 14. The arm 14 includes an extended portion 16 having roller means 18 slidable horizontally in a track or channel device 20 secured to the lower edge of the window assembly illustrated generally at 22. The operating arm 14 has a cross arm 24 pivoted thereto intermediate its ends as indicated at 26. At one end of the cross arm 24 is provided roller means 28 identical to the roller means 18, which is slidable horizontally in the track or channel 20.

extends as a chordiacross thearc defined by movement of the nut when the windowis fully raised or lowered. This of course requires minimum swinging. movement of the motorand further provides for the most effective transmission of power from the .motor through the linkage, to the window. t
' Referring now to Figures 3-7 there is illustrated a similar arrangement. In this case the motor 50 is rigidly connected to a flange 52 of the mounting bracket 54 located within the hollow structure. Pivoted to the bracket 54 is the operating arm 56, the pivot mounting therefor being indicated at 58. The opposite end of the operating arm 56 is provided with roller means indicated at 60 horizontally slidable in a channel or track indicated at 62 and secured to the lower edge of the window assembly 64. A cross arm 66 is pivoted as indicated at 68 to the operating arm 56 and has one end provided with roller means 70 also slidable horizontally in the track or channel means 62. The opposite end of the cross arm 66 is provided with roller means 72 horizontally slidable in track or channel means 74 fixedly secured within the hollow structure.
Mounted intermediate the ends of the operating arm 56 is a nut 76. The nut 76 is retained in position by a carrier element 78. The detailed mounting of the nut and carrier element is best illustrated in Figures 57. As seen in these figures, the nut comprises an annular body 80 having a central opening 82 and provided. with diametrically opposed ears 84. The cars 84 are provided with screw shaft receiving openings 86 one of which is threaded for engaging a screw shaft 88.
The nut retainer or carrier element 78 includes a stud 90 adapted to extend through an opening 92 in the operating arm 56 and to be peened over or otherwise secured therein. At the opposite side of the operating arm the element 78 includes a flat plate portion 94 and a pair of upwardly extending ears 96 each of which has a cylindrical outer surface portion 98 and an outwardly extending flange 100 adapted to overlie the nut 76. As a result of this construction, the screw shaft 88 extends diametrically across the central opening 82 in the nut and the nut retainer element 78 is thus permitted very substantial angular movement with respect to the nut about the axis of the stud 90.
In the present case the screw shaft 88 is connected to the motor shaft 102 by a flexible coupling 104 which may be of standard design and arranged "to permit relatively minor swinging movement of the screw shaft 88 to accommodate it to movement of the nut 76 in the arcuate path designated at 106. In this case it will be 3 observed that with the window in fully raised or lowered position, the screw shaft 88 occupies the same position so that the required swinging movement of the screw shaft 88 is reduced to a minimum.
In both embodiments of the present invention the nut which is associated with the motor driven screw shaft is located intermediate the ends of the operating arm and spaced substantially from the fixed pivot mounting therefor, so as to provide for eflicient swinging of the operating arm by the motor driven mechanism. For this purpose the nut carried by the operating arm is located in substantially the same horizontal plane as the fixed pivot mounting of the operating arm and substantially beneath the pivot connection between the operating arm and cross arm when the window is in the elevated position.
The drawings and the foregoing specification constitute a description of the improved power window regulators in such full, clear, concise and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to practice the invention, the scope of which is indicated by the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. Power window regulator mechanism comprising linkage including a pair of pivotally interconnected arms, and having a fixed pivot mounting within a hollow structure into and out of which a window is movable, nut mechanism pivotally connected to one of said arms, said nut mechanism comprising a carrier pivoted to said one arm and including a pair of diametrically spaced ears having arcuate outer surfaces and radially outwardly extending retaining flanges, and a nut comprising an annular portion surrounding. said ears and underlying said flanges, said annular portion having aligned, diametrically disposed screw receiving openings.
2. In screw actuated window regulator mechanism, an actuating arm formed of sheet metal having a round opening therethrough, a circular nut retainer body having a stud extending from one side thereof and pivotally received in said opening, a pair of ears at the other side of said body located diametrically opposite each other,- the outer surfaces of said ears being circular, an annular nut having a circular central opening in which said ears are fitted, flanges extending outwardly from said ears to retain said nut between said flanges and said arm, said nut having diametrically aligned openings one of which is threaded to receive a screw shaft, said ears being spaced radially away from the axis of said body to provide for substantial angular movement of said nut relative to said retainer without interference with said ears.
