TRANSOM-OPERATING MECHANISM.
This invention relates to improvements in a mechanism for operating a transom, adapted more especially for use in residences, office buildings and hotels.
An object of the invention is to provide a mechanism embodying a reciprocating element operated by a non-travelling screw, wherein the motion of said element is communicated to the transom through the medium of a few simple parts.
Another object resides in the provision of means for inclosing said reciprocating element, and rotatively connected therewith.
A further object is to provide closure means which is compact, neat and attractive in appearance, simple in construction and which may, for this reason, be manufactured at a low cost.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will be clearly set forth in the following description, taken with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features I of course reserve the shape, size and arrangement of details of the structure actually illustrated without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention, as the claims define the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a transom operating device, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof illustrating diagrammatically the device connected to a door frame and transom.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, certain parts being removed to clearly illustrate the interior of the casing; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on the line H of Fig. 2.
The same numerals identify the same parts throughout the several views.
In the particular description of the drawings, and referring particularly to Fig. 2, the letter A designates a transom, while the letter B denotes the door framing or amb.
To the latter is secured a housing 5 containing a gearing (not shown), operated by a crank 6, whereby rotative movement is transmitted to a non-travelling screw 7. Said screw 7 rises vertically from said housing 5 and is provided with suitable bearings,
conveniently disposed therealong, in the form of brackets 8 and 9, which are secured to the framing as indicated at 10.
The transom A is operatively connected to and within said casing 17 is mounted a reciprocating nut or. element 19.
The above description, in a general way, sets forth the cooperating parts of a complete transom lifter, but as my invention is more particularly directed to certain mechanism contained therein, a complete and full explanation and portrayal thereof now follows.
Preferably the nut 19 is composed of separable members 20 and 21 which are assembled as shown in Fig. 4, and when so positioned present a diametrically threaded bore 22 for the reception of the screw 7. The members may be segmentally recessed as indicated at 23 and are further provided with pintles 24 and 25 seating within the axial recesses 26 of the casing 17.
The casing 17 is also comprised of separable members 27 and 28, having lateral extensions 29 and 80 which form a bifurcated socket for the reception of the link 14. The casing is also provided with side openings 81 and 32 slightly elongated for a purpose to be hereinafter pointed out. On inspection of Fig. 4, it will be observed that the sides of the casing are centrally expanded to furnish material for the drilling of said recesses 26.
Obviously the movement of said screw 7 is communicated to the nut 19 causing the same to rise or fall thereon according to the direction of said movement. Assuming that the nut 19 is travelling upwardly, the easing 17 travelling therewith rotates on the pintles 24 and 25 and communicates motion by means of the link 14-and arm 11 to the ransom A.
It is possible that during the use of the de vice the pintles may wear uneven in their respective recesses, or the screws 18 may become loose. Under such circumstances separation of the nut members might easily occur so as to lessen the cooperation between the screw 7 and the threaded bore 22. To
obviate any separation I place spring Washers 33v concentric with said pintles 24 and 25 Which bear against the outer faces of said nut members and the inner surface of said casing. Obviously any separation of the nut members is compensated by said Washers.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described an element comprising separable members provided with axial pintles, a closure for said element adapted to rotatively engage said members and resilient means supported by said pintles for forcing said separable members in close assemblage.
2. In a device of the character described a reciprocating element comprising separable members provided with axial pintles, a casing for said element embodying separable members having alined apertures adapted to receive said pintles and to permit rotative movement of said casing With respect to said element and resilient means for forcing the separable members of said element in close assemblage.
3. In a device of the character described a nut, comprising separable members, pintles coaXially arranged on said nut, a casing comprising separable members having alined apertures for the reception of said pintles and permitting rotative movement of said casing and having upper and lower openings, and resilient means encircling each of said pintles and positioned betiv leen each separable member oi said casing and nut, and being adapted to force said separable members of said nut in close assemblage.
4. In a device of the character described a nut, comprising separable members, pin tles coaxially arranged on said nut, a casing comprising separable members having alined apertures for the reception of said pintles and permitting rotative movement of said casing and having upper and lower openings and resilient means for forcing said nut separable members in close assemblage.
