Description
PATENTED SEPT. 3, 1907.
L. W. SHERWOOD. CENTER PUNCH. APPLIOATIONI'ILED 0012s, 1906.
l i ha amen LAWRENCE W. SHERWOOD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CENTER-PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1907.
Application filed October 23, 1906. Serial No. 340,192.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE W. SHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in centering-punches and has for its object to produce a centering device which shall be simple and economic of construction and accurate and reliable in its action.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter and in detail explained.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, may know how to make and use my improved device, I will proceed to describe the same referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1. is a perspective view showing the several radial centering arms projecting within the space in the frame or body adapted to receive the work to be centered under the punch; Fig. 2. is a vertical section taken on the line XX of Fig. 3; Fig. 3. is a plan view of the body of the device with the top plate and punch supporting bridge removed.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
1 is the body or bed, preferably of cast metal, and formed with a suitable depression to receive the centering arms and their operative devices, and with threaded portions 2 adapted to receive metal screws 3 by which the cover or plate 4; is secured in position as clearly shown. This body portion is formed with a suitable handle 5, of any preferred design, and 6 is a bridge secured, by screws 7, to the cover or plate 4, and 8 is a punch adapted to vertical movement in a bearing 9 in the bridge 6, which punch is returned to its normal position by a coiled spring 10 located between the bridge and the head of the punch as clearly shown.
Within the bed or body 1 are arranged three centering arms 11 12 and 13 which are adapted to reciprocation within slotted guides 14 formed in the bed or body as most clearly shown in Fig. 3. These arms are adapted to approach a common center coincident with the axis of the punch 8 and their movement toward and from this common center is effected in the following manner:
Levers 15 15 and 16 16 are rotatively mounted upon vertically disposed cylindrical bearings 17, cast with the body or bed 1, and held in position by washers 18 when the cover or plate 4 is secured in place. Each of the levers are formed with a circular hub upon which are segmental cogs 19, adapted to mesh as shown at Fig. 3, and their free or vibrative ends are secured to the centering arms" l1 12 and 13 through the medium of pins 20 passing through longitudinal slots in said arms. The connecting pin which connects the two intermediate arms 15 passes centrally through a stem or vertical shalt 23, located within a slot 21 in the cover or plate 4, which is threaded to engage with a screwthreaded cap or knob 22 by which said stem may be moved back and forth in the slot 21. When said stem or shaft is moved toward the punch 8 it carries with it the centering arm 11 and the ends of the levers l5 15 connected therewith, and; by reason of the segmental gearing connection between the hubs on said levers and the outside levers 16, the centering arms 12 and 13 are moved simultaneously with and to the same extent as the arm 11 causing the work within the space 24 in the body or bed to be accurately centered under the punch 8.
The handle 5 of the centering device is utilized to locate the device around the work to be centered and, when properly centered, the punch 8 is caused to descend upon the work by a blow imparted to its head, whereupon the coil spring 10 will cause the punch. to be restored to its normal position and the centering arms are then restored to their normal position by forcing the knob 22 and its stem rearward. The stem or vertical shaft 23 terminates, at its lower end, in a flat head 01 plate 25, so that, by screwing up said cap or knob 22 it maybe clamped to the upper plate 4- in any position, thereby setting the centering arms at any desired point.
Having described the construction and operation oi my improved device what 1' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a centering device a body or bed formed with a space therein for the Work to be centered and with a vertically movable punch located over said space; reci n-ocatory arms radially disposed in the body or bed. having vibrativc levers connected at one end with said arms and journaled at the opposite end to the bed, and formed with meshing segmental gears: the intermediate levers connected with one and the same centering, arm and said arm connected with means for reciprocating the same whereby the several centering arms may be caused to approach or recede from a point coincident with the axis of the punch substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAWRENCE W. SHERWOOD.
