INVENTOR ara d ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 25, 1934 Q UNITED STATES PATENT F E WINDOW REGULATOR Burton S. Floraday. Toledo, Ohio, assignorto The Dura Company, Toledo, Ohio, a corporation of 1 Ohio L Application January 25,
2 Claims.
The invention relates to window regulators which are adapted particularly for use in raising or lowering windows of vehicles of the closed type. One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved construction of regulator having a member formed separately from the mounting plate and providing an extended bearing for the handleor crank shaft. Another object is to make the member a die casting, thereby reducing its cost and at the same time securing a relatively long bearing having good wearing properties. A further object is to so construct the member that it has an integral portion forming a shoulder for positioning the resilient coil or coil spring of the irreversible drive mechanism.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying 1 drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a window regulator showing an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing another embodiment of my invention.
The window regulator shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 has the mounting plate 1 which is preferably formed of sheet metal and the lifter element 2 mounted on this plate. The lifter element comprises the gear segment 3 and the lifter arm 4 fixedly secured to each other and the lifter element is secured to the shaft 5 which extends transversely of and is journalled in the plate 1. At the side of the plate opposite the lifter element there is the spiral window counterbalancing spring 6 having one end secured to the irreversible drive mechanism, this cup beingfixedly secured to the plate 1 at the side thereof opposite the lifter element. The plate is provided with the tongue 11 which is preferably struck out therefrom and the terminal portion of which is engageable with the side of thegear.
segment opposite that adjacent the plate. The pinion 8 is journalled upon the pin 12 which extends transversely of the tongue ll and is fixedly 1932, Serial No. 588.765
which has the diverging outwardly extending wings 14. This mechanism also comprises the driven member 15 having its base 16 fixedly secured to the pinion 8 as by being riveted thereto and having its peripherally spaced fingers 17 extending over the driving member and embracing its wings. This mechanism further comprises the resilient coil or coil spring 18 which encircles the wings and the fingers and has inturned ends, one of which extends between one of the wings and one of the fingers and the other of which extends between the other of the wings and the same finger. This resilient coil or coil spring has a normal diameter greater than that of the interior face ofthe cup 10, so that the irreversible drive mechanism normally functions to hold the lifter element in its adjusted position, but upon actu-' coil or coil spring being contracted; The pin 12 is in axial alignment with the handle shaft 7 and extends into the same and more particularly the portion thereof forming the driving member and terminates near the outer end of the cup.
The handle shaft is supported by the cup and to provide a good bearing for the handle shaft which will hold this shaft from play and particularly angular movement or wobbling during the life of the window regulator, the die-cast bushing 19 is secured to the cup. This die-cast bushing has the reduced portion or neck 20 which extends outwardly through the base of the cup and the enlarged portion 21 which is located within the cup. Both the reduced portion and the enlarged portion have a press fit with the cup and the reduced portion is staked over at 22 to fixedly secure the bushing in place. The reduced portion or neck 20 is relatively long and provides the relatively long cylindrical bearing for the handle shaft and the enlarged portion 21 has its end face engageable with the resilient coil or coil spring 18 to position the same. It will be seen thatywith this construction a relatively long or extended bearing having good wearing properties is provided for the handle shaft and that the member forming this bearing also functions to position the resilient coil or coil spring.
In the modification shown in Figure 4 the parts have the same general arrangement as those shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, with the exception that the cup and the bearing for the handle 30 formed near its base and engageable with and,
adapted to position the resilient coil or coil spring of the irreversible drive mechanism.
What I claim as my invention is: Y
1. In a window regulator having a mounting plate, a lifter element mounted on said plate,
and clutch mechanism comprising a coil spring and a handle shaft for actuating said lifter ele ment, and an integral housing member secured to said plate and forming a bearing for the shaft and having a stop surface abutting said spring, there being an enlargement on said shaft contacting the end of the bearing member and holding the shaft against longitudinal movement.
2. In a window regulator having a mounting plate, a lifter element mounted on said plate, and clutch mechanism comprising a coil spring and a handle shaft for actuating said lifter element, and a sleeve forming a bearing for the shaft, a stop surface on the inner end of said sleeve for holding the shaft against longitudinal movement, 'a flanged inner end on said sleeve abutting said spring, a sheet metal housing for said clutch mechanism having an end rolled over said flange and secured thereto, and means for securing said housing to said mounting plate.
