FURNACE-REGULATOR CONSTRUCTION.

To whom it may concern: Be it known that I, THOMAS OLINGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace-Regula'tor Constructions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to a furnace regulator construction adapted to control the drafts of furnaces and regulate the opening and closing of the same.- It is aprimary object and purpose of the present invention to construct a device of this character which may be made entirely from sheet metal, all parts thereof being readily blanked and drawn by dies and so constructed that itmay be made in a relatively small size yet hold'the furnace drafts in any position to which adjusted, through the frictional hearing of the inner movable part against the outer stationary enclosing casing of the construction. A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which is especially durable, having but few parts none of which are liable to get out of order, and which is very. economical to manufacture. These and various other objects and purposes, not at this time specifically stated, together with novel. constructions and arrangements of parts for effecting the same will appear as understanding of the invention is had from. the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,

Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, parts being broken away and shown in section for better disclosure.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
In the construction of the furnace regulator, an outer housing or casing is used, substantially cup-dike in form and having an outer front side 1 from which sides 2 extend inwardly for a distance and are then turned outwardly making an annular flange 3 from which at diametrically opposed points ears 3 project through which screws or other equivalent securing devices such as indicated at 4, may pass to connect the regulator to a wall or other like support in the room in which the regulator is installed.
,The front 1 has a central inwardly pressed circular section 5 and a circular opening 6 'of less diameter than the section 5 is made in said section. In opposite points'of the curved inwardly extending side 2, openings 7 are cut for the passage of the draft chains, as will later appear.
Within the housing a second cup-like openings 7, leads at its ends to the feed draft and check draft of the furnace, is passed over the upper portion of the inwardly projecting side 10 of theinner member and may be secured thereto by means of two tongues 13 and 13 cut from the side 10 and the flange 11 and bent toward each other over the chain, as shown in Fig. 2, these tongues passing through a link of the chain and meeting at their ends, thereby making a closed loop and preventing disengagement of the chain. Two tongues it, one at each side of the tongue 13 are also out from flange ll and turned to the rear,.being adapted to coact with a lug 15 cut from the lower portion of the side 2 of the outer housing and turned upwardly almost into alinement with the lower ear 3, as shown in Fig. 2, the rotative movement of the inner member being limited by engagement of the tongues 14 with lug 15, as is evident.
An operating handle 16 made from a flat pieceof metal is used to turn the inner cuplike member. This operating member at one end has a'handle portion 17 and at the other end a pointer 18, serving to indicate the po-* ice sition of the drafts, and an intermediate inwardly extending portion 19. disk of sheet metal, 20, seats in the recess in the front member. Spring 21 is flattened and put under stress and is held in such position by a cotter pin 22 which passes through an opening in the portion 19 of the operating handle. It is apparent that the spring serves to draw the disk 20 securely against the recessed portion at 5 and also forces the bead 9 against the rear side of the front 1 of the outer housing, there being a frictional engagement made which insures that the inner movable member shall hold any position to which it is moved and that the weight of either the check or feed draft will not be suiiicient to move the same to a different position, though by grasping the chain 12, and pulling on the same, the regulator may be changed in position as may vbe desirable many times, as when one is attending to a furnace in the basement and will not have to go upstairs to the regulator in order to change the same and the position of the drafts.
Every part of the construction of regulator is of sheet metal, is easily and cheaply manufactured, the assembly is simple, and the frictional engagement of the parts is sure and unchanging. The construction may be made in small size as is very desirable, yet with out danger that the regulator will not hold in any position to which moved. It has proved particularly effective in practice.
I claim: 1. In a furnace regulator, an outer housing member having a front, a rearwardly extending annular side extending from the edges of said-front and a flange turned from the rear edges of said side, said front having a central opening therethrough and an inwardly pressed circular depression around said opening, a second member of similar form located within the housing member, provided with an annular bead at the junction of the front and side thereof extending forwardly and bearing against the rear side of the front of the housing member, a chain passed over the second member, the side of the first member having openings there-.
through through which the ends of the chain pass, means for attaching the chain to said second member, means for limitingthemovement of the. second member in either direction with respect to the housing member, a disk located in the recess or depression in the front of the housing member and provided with an elongated "opening ther'efre wardly extending lpro'ection lyin through, a handle member having an inwardlyprojecting portion passing through said'opening in the disk, the front of the second member having a similar opening and said inwardly projecting portion of the handle passing therethrough, a leaf spring through the middle portion of which the said inwardly projecting portion of the handle passes, its ends bearing against the rear sideof the front of the second member adjacent the bead thereof, and a cotter pin passing through said inwardly projecting portion of the handle and serving to place the spring under stress and secure the parts together, substantially as described.
2. In a furnace regulator, an outer housing member of sheet metal of substantially cuplike shape, a second movable member also substantially cup-like in shape located within the housing member, means for attaching a chain between its ends to said second member, an operating handle formed from a piece of flat metal having an inwardly extending ortion passing through the front sides of iioth the housing member and said second member, said housing member having an opening for the said passage of said handle portion with a diameter slightly larger than the width of said portion, and the second memberhaving an opening corresponding to the cross section of said handle portion, a disk located against the outer side of the front of the housing member through which said inwardly extending portion of the handle passes, and spring means disposed between the said inwardly extending handle portion'and the second member for frictionally engaging the said second member against the housing. member, substantially as described.
3. In a. furnace regulator, an outer housing member of sheet metal, a similar inner chain actuating member, a .flat operating handle member passing through the front sides of the two members, being connected to the inner member to turn the same and having free movement with respect to the housing member, a disk between the handle member and the housing member then b which 'said handle member passes, the disk moving with the handle member, and spring means associated with the handle member for forcing the housing and inner members together to make a frictional enga mentbetween them, substantially as described.

an inner cupa spring on the inner end of the projection bearing against the rear side of the front of the chain actuating member, and means on the projection for holding the spring under stress, substantially as described.
' 5. In a furnace regulator, the elements in combination defined in claim 4, combined with a circular disk disposed between. the front side of the housing member and the outer portion of the handle, said projection of the handle passing therethrough, and said disk covering the opening in the housing 1 member through which the projection from the handle asses, substantially as described.
6. In a urnace regulator, an outer cupshaped housing member provided at one side with an inwardly struck lug, an inner chain actuating member of like form and including an annular flange turned from the inner edges of the side of said member, a tongue .struck from said flange and engageable with the chain passed around the member to secure the chain to said member, two lugs, one at each side of the first tongue and turned to the rear to strike against the lug on the housing member on movement of the chain actuating member to predetermined positions, and means for turning the chain actu-. atingmemberwith reference to the housing 3 o 4 7 member, substantially as described."
7. In a furnace regulator, a supporting I member, a chain actuating member mounted within the supporting member andprovided with an annular bead bearing against the supporting member, an operating handle passing through the supporting member and connected with the chain actuating member to turn the same and spring means interposed between theoperatmg handle and said chain actuating member for forcing said bead against the supporting member, substantially as described.
8. In a furnace regulator, an outer cupshaped housing member, an inner cupshaped chain actuating member located within the housing member and provided a with an. annular bead adapted to bear against the rear side of the front 'of the housing member, a flat handle located in front of the housing member and having a projection passing through the fronts of the housing and chain actuating members, being against therear side of the front of'the chain actuating member.
