Abstract

748,719. Batteries. OLDHAM & SON, Ltd., and PROUT, L. R. Sept. 6, 1954 [Sept. 7, 1953], No. 24727/53. Class 53. A battery container made of polythene or other thermoplastic material is provided with a lid 3 which is formed with tongues 4, or grooves, that engage corresponding grooves or tongues 5 in the wall of the container. The tongues and grooves may be continuous round the periphery of the lid or in short lengths. The lid is snapped into position and may be welded to the container by the application of heat and pressure to the joint by a welding tool 7. To prevent the tool from sticking a strip 6 of material such as polytetrafluorethylene may be placed over the joint, and ribs 9 may be formed on the external surfaces of the lid and container on each side of the joint to guide the tool midway over the joint. The rounded tongues on the lid may engage in rectangular grooves in the container to allow for flow of the material during welding.
