Abstract

748,533. Spray-producers. BEDE, J. A. Feb. 10, 1954 [Feb. 16, 1953], No. 3959/54. Addition to 689,620. Class 69 (3). In a method of spraying a paint containing a solvent, in which the paint is heated to a temperature of at least 135‹ F. whilst being maintained at a pressure sufficient to prevent boiling off of its solvent, and subsequently projecting the heated point at a pressure of at least 100 lb/sq. inch through an outlet orifice so that a part of the solvent is transformed to its gaseous state, the paint is such that its viscosity is substantially reduced by the heating, and the boiling point of not less than 50 per cent by weight of its solvent is at least 135‹ F. at atmospheric pressure. No atomizing gas other than that released from the paint itself is thereby utilized. In Fig. 1 a pump 3 draws paint from a tank 1 and passes it through a heat exchanger 4 to a gun 6, and excess paint is returned via a conduit 7 and a pressure release valve 8. The gun includes an axial valve stem which is urged forwardly by a spring 15 to close the gun outlet and is retracted by a trigger 17. The paint in the heat-exchanger may be maintained under the full pressure at which it is ultimately delivered from the gun, or under only a sufficient pressure, i.e. about 30 lb/sq. inch to prevent boil off of the solvent during heating. Specification 689,601, [Group XI], is referred to.
