Abstract
748,330. Suction cleaners hose couplings. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 11, 1954 [Nov. 25, 1953 ; Nov. 25, 1953], No. 32692/54. Classes 8(1) and 99(1). A vacuum cleaner comprises a casing having an annular air outlet 5, Fig. 1, which extends ciroumferentially of the casing, a valve 14 which in a closed position blocks flow of air through the opening 5, means comprising springs 15 biasing the valve to its open position, actuating means for closing the valve and a blower opening 12 through the valve and casing for a hose connector to which air is directed when the valve is closed. The closing means comprises tongues 17 on the valve 14 projecting into the blower opening 12 and engaged by the end of the hose connection when:inserted to close the valve. A latch retains the hose in position. The air inlet 4 is at the opposite end of the cleaner and when used for blowing the cleaner is upended so that the blower opening 12 is at the top. In a modification, Fig. 3, the cleaner is mounted on wheels 32, 33 and the annular discharge opening 41 is formed between the wheel 32 and the casing. Air flows through ports 42 in the casing, ports 43 in a bearing plate 35 to the opening 41. The ports 42 are closed by a valve 52 having sealing pads 53. The valve 52 is held open by a spring 57 and closed by the connector 61 acting through a spring 60 on the valve. In a modification of this construction the valve is on the upstream side of the ports in the casing so that when closed the air pressure tends to maintain it closed. The valve is connected to an inner sleeve in the blower opening slidable in an outer sleeve which is spring biased outwardly and forced inwardly by the blower connector which has a latch which engages a shoulder on the inner sleeve. The outer sleeve forces the connector outwardly, the catch carrying the inner sleeve with the connector drawing the valve to a closed position.
