747,693. Pneumatic tyres. SCHLICHTMANN, W. H. Oct. 22, 1953, No. 29221/53. Class 144 (2). The tread surface of a pneumatic tyre having a convex crown comprises a plurality of parallel circumferential rows of circumferentially spaced grooves 1, the grooves in adjacent rows being relatively staggered and overlapping and the length of the groove area in a row being increased in proportion to the variation of the tyre diameter at that row from the diameter at the middle of the tread in order to equalize the ground gripping action across the tread under load. Thus the grooves in the rows A, B towards the side of the tyre are longer and more closely spaced than those in the intermediate rows C which in turn are longer and more closely spaced than those in the rows D at the crown; or the outside rows may have a larger number of grooves and shorter spacing, Fig. 2 (not shown). As shown, Fig. 3, each groove 1 has inwardly tapering inclined side and end walls 9, 10.
