Abstract

In the production of ammonium sulphate by absorbing ammonia in sulphuric acid contained in a saturator, slurry containing ammonium sulphate crystals is continuously removed from the saturator and reintroduced at a point immediately adjacent to that at which the crude gas enters the saturated solution. By this means supersaturation is relieved by increasing the size of the crystals rather than by forming new crystals. As shown, slurry is passed from the bottom of a saturator 11 via pipe 19, pump 21 and pipe 23 to an annular distributing duct 24 surrounding the cracker head 13. The walls of saturator 11 are sprayed by water issuing from orifices 25b <PICT:0747657/III/1> in annular pipe 25. The density of the slurry at the bottom of the saturator is controlled by passing in gas from a number of orifices in a turbulating coil 17.
