Abstract
747,524. Making tubes; angular bending. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING, Inc. Feb. 10, 1954 [June 22, 1953], No. 3893/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A tube-bending machine includes a rotary former, a wiper bar adapted to move round the former simultaneously therewith and at twice its rotary speed to bend a tube therearound, and a stationary follower bar adapted to hold the tube as the former and wiper bar rotate. A tube D formed with a bulge B and previously heated at C is positioned between a former 10 and longitudinally spaced follower and wiper bars 13, 12, respectively, with the bulge between the bars. The former 10 is constructed in two halves 50, 52 and, after the tube has been positioned, the upper half 50 is lowered by a rod 56, operated by hydraulic means 54, on to the lower. The arms 12, 13, carried by slides 36, 66, are moved forward to engage the tube by hydraulic means 64, 62 for the slide 36 and similar means for the slide 66. The former 10 and a frame 40 on which the wiper arm slide 36 is mounted are then rotated, the frame 40 at twice the speed of the former 10, by a gear 24 on a sleeve 26 and by a gear 32 on a sleeve 34, respectively. The former 10 is thus moved through 90 degrees and the wiper bar 12 through 180 degrees to bend the tube as in Fig. 4e. The bent tube is then removed, the bulge B opened and an extension E attached thereto.
