Abstract
747,519. Switching systems for motor vehicle lamps. MOORE ELECTRONIC LABORATORIES, Inc. March 19, 1954, No. 8155/54. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XXXVII and XL (b)] In a control system for the high- and lowpowered-filaments 50, 52, respectively, of motor vehicle headlamps, of the kind wherein a driver-operated ratchet switch 60, 63-65 allows either the low-powered filament to be permanently energized from the battery 10, or the two filaments to be selectively energized over a relay 32, 34 controlled by a photoelectric unit 30 responsive to the intensity of light in the vicinity of the vehicle, the switch is provided with auxiliary contacts 74, 76 which are operated by light pressure on its actuating member 60 insufficient to move the change-over contact 65. The auxiliary contacts, disable the automatic control system, by short-circuiting, or open-circuiting, the relay coil 32 so long as the light pressure is maintained on member 60, thus causing the relay to energize the high-powered filament-say for signalling purposes-even although the ambient lighting may be such as to have caused the automatic control system to have selected the low-powered filament. In a modified arrangement, a manually operated change-over switch allows permanent energization of the high-powered filament over a circuit independent of the relay. The auxiliary contacts 74, 76 may be mounted in a housing which clips to, and forms an extension of, the footactuated operating member of the usual ratchet switch. Alternatively, the auxiliary contacts may be directly operated by the actuating pawl of the ratchet switch.
