Abstract

Lubricating compositions comprise predominantly a polyalkylene glycol oil and (A) a diarylamine or a hydroxyaromatic compound having at least 2 free hydroxyl groups in at least one ring or aromatic nucleus, and (B) a condensation product of a b -hydroxyalkylamine and/or an alkylenediamine, which may be N-alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl substituted. The amines may be of formula <FORM:0747479/III/1> where R is a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, naphthyl, anthryl or phenanthryl radical; specific compounds mentioned are phenyla - naphthylamine, p - hydroxydiphenylamine, p, p1-di-hydroxy - di-phenylamine, diphenyl - p - phenylenediamine, diphenylamine, phenothiazine, di-b -naphthylamine, p-isopropoxydiphenylamine, di (p-isopropylphenyl) - p - phenylenediamine, di-b -naphthyl - p - phenylenediamine, p, p1-diisooctyldiphenylamine, phenyl - a - anthrylamine and phenyl - a - phenanthrylamine. Phenols referred to are unsubstituted or nuclear-substituted polyhydric phenols, naphthols and anthrols; specific examples are hydroquinone, t-butylhydroquinone, di-t-butylresorcinol, t-butylcatechol, 1, 2-dihydroxynaphthalene, 1, 4, - dihydroxynaphthalene, 1, 2 - dihydroxy - 4 - phenylbenzene, 5-octyl-1, 4-dihydroxynaphthalene, 1, 3 - dihydroxy - 5 - cetoxybenzene, 1, 2 - dihydroxy - thianthrene, 1, 2 - dihydroxy - 4 - aminonaphthalene and 1, 2-dihydroxy - 4 - isooctylaminobenzene. The condensation product may be triethanolamine, morpholine, aminoethylmorpholine, triethylenetetramine, triisopropanolamine, aminoethyl - ethanolamine, dipropylenetriamine, tetraethylenepentamine, polyethylenediamines, N1, N5-dioleyltetraethylenepentamine, hydroxy - ethyldiethylenetriamine, N, N-di (aminoethyl)-aniline, N-phenyl - diethanolamine and N1, N5-di (2-ethylhexyl) - tetraethylene - pentamine. Polyalkylene glycol oils specified are copolymers of 1, 2-propylene oxide and ethylene oxide, polypropylene glycol or 2-ethylhexyl monoether, trimethylene glycol polymer and secondary butyl methyl polypropylene glycol diether; the monoethers of polyalkylene esters are also referred to. The compositions are compared with those consisting of polypropylene glycol 2-ethylhexyl monoether aminoethyl-morpholine and one of a-naphthol, pentadecyl phenol, 3 - pentadecyl - 4 - aminophenol, 2, 6 - dit - butyl - p - cresol, m - cetoxyphenol, ortho-aminophenol, dodecylaniline and a-naphthylamine.
