Abstract

747,443. Letting off warps in looms. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Feb. 3, 1954 [Feb. 21, 1953], No. 3258/54. Class 142 (2). A warp beam is given increments of rotation at regular intervals, the magnitude of the increments being goverened by the tension of the warp. A shaft 33 drives the beam 10 through an intermittently-engaged clutch 31, 32 and gearing 34-37. The driving element 31 of the clutch is splined on the shaft 33 and has a cam track 44 running against a fixed roller 45, whereby the clutch element moves towards and away from the driven element 32 once in every revolution of the shaft 33. The element 32 is splined on the driven shaft 47, and is slidable in a housing 51, in which it is spring-loaded towards the right, its movement in that direction being limited by a brake disc 49 coming against the end of the housing; the housing is positioned in accordance with the tension of the warp by connections from a movable back-rest 12 loaded by a spring 19. If the tension of the warp increases, the housing 51 moves to the right, causing the driving element 31 to encounter the element 32 earilier in the cycle; the spring loading of the element 32 enables the element 31 to continue its movement to the left, thereby removing the brake 49 and rotating the beam 10 until, as the element 31 returns to the right, the brake re-engages and the clutch elements separate. The movements of the back-rest 12 are transmitted by a lever 38 and a link 39 to a lever 41 formed with a cam slot 62 engaged by a roller 64 on a bellcrank lever 54, so that the end thrust on the clutch element 32 cannot react on the back-rest 12. In a modification, the housing 51 has cam slots engaged by followers fixed to the loom framework, movement of the back-rest 12 causing the housing to turn and therefore move endwise. In another form, a feeler shoe presses on the warp between a back-rest and the harness 22, the lever carrying the shoe being formed with a face cam which causes endwise movement of the housing 51.
