Abstract

747,182. Separating granular &c. materials. EDER, T. Feb. 10, 1953 [Feb. 19, 1952], No. 3738/53. Class 82(2). A mixture of fine and coarse particles (sediment) is resolved with a high degree of accuracy in a multi-stage sedimentation process, each stage of which has a constant flow input, and delivers sediment to the next succeeding stage and fines to the next preceding stage; the liquid transfer involved through the outlet opening of at least one stage being controlled within the limits of an upcurrent of 20 per cent and a down current of 15 per cent of the input to that stage. Stage A is supplied with raw material at 8 and fines overflow from stage B at 19. A pump 15 extracts a quantity of the sediment and pumps it to a constant flow device 9, any excess returning along the pipe 21. This leads to a steady input to stage B and a consequent steady output from stage A. An overflow from stage C is also fed back to stage A, stage C also having a constant input 10. The bottom " feed-bands " to stages B and C are obtained from constant flow devices 26, 27. A constant discharge of sediment is maintained from stage C by the device 11 so that the whole system is self-balancing. Other embodiments are described with two series of stages in series and with four series stages.
