Abstract

Polystyrene compositions suitable for making sound records comprise particles of silicon or boron carbide having their sharp edges ground off. A master batch of 50 per cent carbide, of a size between 0.1 and 10 microns, and 50 per cent polystyrene and, preferably, anti-oxidants such as 2,6-di-tert.-butyl paracresol, diphenylparaphenylenediamine or a mixture of monoor di-heptyldiphenylamine and zinc, calcium, magnesium, barium, lead or manganese stearate is milled for an hour, sheeted and granulated. The record composition containing 0.01 to 0.035 parts of carbide to 100 parts of polystyrene may be obtained by premixing dry or in aqueous emulsion, which is then dried, and finally compounding on heated rollers. Waxes, e.g. carnauba, candellila, and microcrystalline wax, wetting agents, e.g. polyethylene glycol oleyl ether, modifiers, e.g. o-, m- or p-terphenyls or chlorinated bi- or polyphenyls, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- or hexaethylbenzenes, and fillers, e.g. carbon black, calcium carbonate or slate flour, barytes or diatomaceous silica may be included in the composition.
