Abstract
A plastic bituminous composition serving as a heat and sound insulating covering and capable of drying uniformly after being sprayed on to vertical structures to a depth of at least 1/8 inch without running, sliding, or slipping, comprises a normally solid bituminous base, a volatile solvent therefor, and a filler having a factor, calculated from the formula <FORM:0646206/V/1> , where E is the volume per cent of the filler in the liquid composition, F is the volume per cent of the remaining constituents of the liquid, C is the true specific gravity of the filler, and H is the specific gravity of the composition ready for application, of between 0.2 and 0.45, preferably between 0.25 and 0.45. The composition also has a factor, calculated from the formula <FORM:0646206/V/2> , where A is the percentage volume of the filler in the dry composition, B is the percentage volume of the remaining constituents, and D is the specific gravity of the dry composition, of 0.60-1.00, preferably 0.65-0.85. In a modification, the factors D and H in the above formul are replaced by the average of D and H. Methods of obtaining these various factors are described. Fillers may be clay, zinc oxide, litharge, powdered limestone, slate, kieselguhr, tripoli, mica, vermiculite, granulated rubber, sawdust, barium sulphate, cork dust, or the like.
