Gripper mechanism for impression cylinders.- In a printing-machine impression cylinder 66, Fig. 3, of the kind having a gripper shaft 91 offset from the cylinder axis and extending lengthwise through the cylinder, one end of the shaft projecting beyond the end of the cylinder and carrying a tumbler 94 which is alternately engageable, on rotation of the cylinder with stationary pins 109, 111 carried by the machine so that the tumbler is alternately turned in opposite directions to open and close the grippers 65, the tumbler passing through a dead-centre when moving between the open and closed positions, the tumbler is connected to a link 97 shaped to clear the cylinder shaft and extending to a point substantially opposite the gripper shaft, where it is connected to spring means to hold the tumbler in each of its operative positions. The spring means consists of a pivoted lever 99 connected at one end to the link at 98 and at the other to a L-shaped member 102 to which is secured a rod 104 slidable in a block 105. A compression spring 107 surrounding rod 104 bears between block 105 and member 102. The spring tends to rotate the lever 99 in an anticlockwise direction so that the end 96 of link 97 is forced in an outward radial direction. The tumbler has a parallel sided slot 95 having flared ends 95b, 95c to receive the operating pins 109, 111. Fig. 3 shows the position as the grippers 65 move past the sheet feeding table. The pin 109 has just rotated the tumbler through the dead-centre position and is bearing on surface 95b of the tumbler controlling its closing movement. As the rotation of the impression cylinder continues the pin 109 leaves surface 95b as shown in Fig. 4, so that the grippers can close on the sheet presented to the impression cylinder. The grippers are opened after the impression cylinder has turned through about 180 degrees, by the engagement between pin 111 and surface 95c, as shown in Fig. 5. The sheet 50 is then released from grippers 65 and transferred to grippers 114 of delivery cylinder 115. Continued rotation of the impression cylinder causes the tumbler to be turned by pin 111 through the dead-centre position so that the grippers move to the fully-open position ready to receive the next sheet.
