Abstract

746,908. Fencing. BERG, H. Sept. 30, 1953, No. 26878/53. Class 45. [Also in Group XXVIII] A device for laying strip fencing material provided with lateral spikes and wound up in the form of a flat coil comprises a spool carrier 5 adapted to rotatably mount a spool 13 for receiving the strip coil, the spool carrier being rotatable about an axis at right angles to the axis of rotation of the spool, the device also having means for rotating the spool carrier about the first mentioned axis when withdrawing the strip. As shown, the spool carrier has two arms 17, 18 and it is rotatably fixed to a handle 1 by a spindle 2 which passes through a bore in the handle. A spindle 8 detachably fixed between the arms 17, 18 by means of a spring 9 carries the spool 13. The strip is withdrawn from the spool through two pairs of rollers 19, 20 and 33, 34. The rollers 19, 20 are mounted between the arms 17, 18 so as to be freely rotatable and the strip after passing between these rollers, passes through a slot 22 in a plate 21 which is fixed to the arms 17, 18. The plate 21 carries a plate 25 which carries the rollers 33, 34 between upstanding flanges 31, 32. The plate 25 is mounted on the plate 21 by means of screws 29, 30 which engage slots in the plate 25 so that the rollers 33, 34 can be positioned at an angle to the slot 22 and rollers 19, 20. By this means, when the end of the strip is anchored to a post, the strip is twisted beyond its elastic limit as it is drawn from the device and owing to the rotatable mounting of the carrier 5, the strip is laid with a continuous twist so that there are barbs pointing at all angles. A spring-loaded catch 37 which engages one of a number of slots in the plate 25 is provided to lock the plate in one of a number of angular positions relative to the plate 21. In a modification the spindle 8 may be connected to the strip so that it is rotated as the strip is unwound, the rotation being used to rotate the carrier 5 relative to the handle 1. The strip used with the device has barbs formed by stamping notches in its edges. Cutting edges may be provided between the notches. Specifications 746,939 and 746,940 are referred to.
