Abstract
1,253,444. Wire coiling apparatus. MARSHALL RICHARDS BARCRO Ltd. 17 Feb., 1970 [17 Feb., 1969], No. 8530/69. Heading D1T. Wire coiling apparatus comprises a dead block 6, i.e. non-rotatable in operation, a rotor device 10 mounted upstream of the block 6 for coiling wire thereon, an elongate coil carrier means 21 secured to the block 6 to receive coiled wire from the downstream end thereof and to guide the coils away from the block, first holding means mounted on the carrier means 21 and second holding means interengageable with the first holding means and mounted separately from the carrier means 21, the first and second holding means being arranged, when engaged, to hold the coil carrier means 21 and thus the block 6 against rotation under the influence of the coiling torque, the coiled wire passing between the first and second holding means in operation. The coil carrier means 21 preferably comprises plates 23, 24 arranged in cruciform configuration, and is angled to extend laterally downwards from the block 6. The ends of the plates 23, 24, may be provided with angled rods 26, 26a at the lower end of the carrier means whereby the coiled wire is deposited on a conveyor 20 with the axes of the coils vertical. The first holding means in this embodiment is in the form of a wheel 27 mounted between the rods 26, 26a at the lower end of the carrier means. The wheel 27 engages with the second holding means which in this embodiment is the conveyor 20. In operation, wire 12 passes through a hollow rotary shaft 2 and is deflected by guide 14 to a pulley 16 on the rotor device 10 which is fixed to the shaft 2. As the rotor device 10 rotates, wire is wound on the stationary block 6, the coiling torque tending to rotate the block 6. The coils of wire pass from the end of the block 6 to the coil carrier means 21 and slide down the carrier means to be deposited on the conveyor 20. The coiling torque tending to rotate the block 6 also tends to rotate the carrier means 21 and forces it down towards the conveyor where the engagement between the wheel 27 and the conveyor arrests the rotation of the carrier and thus the block 6. As the conveyor 20 moves to carry the coils away, the wheel 27 rides over the coils on the conveyor. The wheel may be adjustable in position to allow for different angles of the conveyor relative to the axis of the apparatus. In a further embodiment, the first holding means is in the form of a roller on one of the plates of the carrier means, and the second holding means is in the form of a roller mounted on the machine frame, the interengagement of the rollers arresting the rotary movement of the carrier means and thus the block. The coils of wire pass between the two rollers as the coils slide down the carrier means.
