A conveyer comprises a short length of belt 11 which is supported on a carrier member consisting of elements 1 connected by links 2 and guided by rollers 3 along a rail track 4 which includes a reversal point as shown in Fig. 2. The belt is normally given a trough formation by support members 6 hingedly mounted at 9 on the element 1 and held in an inclined position by springs 7. The belt is secured to some or all of the supports 6 by pins 12 passing through apertures 13 of larger diameter in the support members 6. On approaching the reversal point the support members 6 are depressed against the action of the springs 7 into a horizontal position either by the tension of the edges 10 of the belt or by guides (not shown) fixed to the conveyer framework 5, which engage rollers on the inner ends of the supports 6, whereby the belt assumes a flat formation. Beyond the reversal point, the supports 6 are returned to their inclined position by the springs 7 and the belt again assumes a trough formation. Instead of the short length of belt 11, the conveying surface may comprise an endless belt guided around an endless track. Specification 698,639 is referred to.
