Abstract

746,734. Feeding webs. TIME, Inc. Sept. 22, 1954, No. 27442/54. Class 100 (1). Mechanism for moving a tape intermittently comprises a tape drive which yieldably engages a length of the tape and continuously urges the tape in one direction, a pair of jaws between which the tape passes before reaching the tape drive, and a jaw actuator for causing the jaws alternately to open to free the tape and to close to grip the tape and bring it to rest. A magnetic tape 10 (Fig. 1) having groups of indices 80, 81 thereon is drawn over a pick-up head 84 by endless bands 14, 15 running around driven and idler rolls 16, 17 and 38, 39 respectively. The rolls 16 and 17 are mounted in standards 20, 24 on a base 18 whilst the rollers 38, 39 are mounted on brackets 42, 45 on a plate 40 which may be adjusted vertically by co-operating standards 52, 53 and screws 54, 54a. The rollers 16 and 38 are driven by belts 31, 50 from a motor 37. The bands 14, 15 frictionally engage the tape so as to drive it forwardly but if the tape is gripped the bands 14, 15 are adapted to slip over the tape until it is released. The tape is gripped between a fixed jaw 60 and a jaw 61 mounted on an arm 65 pivoted on a rod 64 and held in open position by a solenoid 68. When the solenoid is deenergized the jaws are clamped together by springs 69. Rollers 86 and 88 hold the tape in contact with the pick-up head 84 and a roller 57 is provided for holding the tape between the endless band 14, 15. Loops 75, 76 are maintained at both ends of the apparatus by photoelectric devices 77, 77<SP>1</SP> controlling motors 79, 791 operating feed rollers 71, 72 and 73, 74 respectively. The indicia markings 80 convey information via the pick-up head 84 to a photo-composer for the performance of a printing operation. The markings 81 serve to control the movement of the tape. In operation, the signal from the mark 81 is fed through a delay circuit to a multi-vibrator controlling the conductivity of a thermionic valve in turn controlling the solenoid 68 (Fig. 2, not shown), so that the solenoid is de-energized and the tape clamped by the jaws 60, 61. Upon completion of the printing operation by the photo-composer in accordance with the indicia markings 80 the photo-composer passes a second signal to the multi-vibrator so that the solenoid 68 is again re-energized to free the tape 10. Instead of the lower endless band 14 the tape may be held against the upper band 15 by air blast acting in a groove arranged below the tape (Fig. 4, not shown). The tape may alternatively be driven by passing it through two slots 122, 123 in a vacuum box 120 of a width substantially equal to that of the tape, suction being applied through a port 124 so as to draw the tape into the box 120. A photo-electric device 125 controls the size of the loop 76c which is formed in the box through rollers 73a, 74a in the same way as the rollers 73, 74 in Fig. 1 are controlled.
