Abstract

1,019,488. Feeding sheets and webs. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 22, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No. 43038/64. Heading B6B. [Also in Division F2] A device for feeding sheets, cards, or webs, or for driving an endless belt which can be used for separating sheets from a stack, comprises a pair of movable endless bands 14, 16, Fig. 1, between which the sheets &c. 12 are inserted, clutch means operable to bring the bands into feeding engagement with the sheets &c. and brake means operable to stop movement of the sheets &c. without stopping the movement of the bands. The bands 14, 16 can be driven in either direction, but it is preferred to use two devices in series (Fig. 2, not shown) when the sheets &c. are to be fed in either of two opposite directions. The device includes upper and lower frames 11, 13 with ends 17 supporting pulleys which are recessed centrally on their peripheries to receive the bands 14, 16, and the recesses are coated with rubber or plastics material. The pulleys on the right are connected to drive-shafts 18, 20, respectively, and each such pulley is urged by a spring member 88 of circular shape, mounted on pegs which pass through the pulley, so that the endless bands 14, 16 are held taut. The top band 14 can be urged towards the band 16 by a drive shoe 24 of low friction material connected to the armature 40 of an electromagnet 36 through the medium of balls and two rods 44, which provide a connection which needs no precise alignment. The brake means for the tape 12 to be fed comprises a brake shoe 28 which is vertically slidable in the lower frame 13 and is recessed to accommodate the lower band 16, so that when the shoe is in the raised position, its two outer edges 59, Fig. 5, clamp the tape 12 against lower edges 57 of the upper frame 11, but leave the two bands 14, 16 free to move. The brake shoe 28 is mounted by balls on the ends of two plungers 66 which are urged upwardly by springs, and the shoe is depressed into non- braking position when the electromagnet 36 is energized to depress the drive shoe 24 which, through the bands 14, 16, depresses the shoe 28. In order to hold the shoe 28 permanently in a depressed condition, weak electromagnets 62 are capable of holding it depressed if the shoe is first depressed by operating the electromagnets 36. Separating sheets (Fig. 7, not shown).-The device can be arranged to drive an endless belt continuously or intermittently to separate sheets sequentially from a stack in a magazine. The belt is arranged over three idler pulleys, one of which is adjacent the sheet stack. If the sheets are to be separated pneumatically, the belt is perforated or is porous, and the pulley adjacent the stack is hollow and perforated about its periphery, and connected to a vacuum source. The clutch means in the device can be operated intermittently in timed sequence to cause sheets to be separated and forwarded in spaced relationship.
